Bread Baking Babes and sukkar bi tahin

J.I.T.
Just in time!!!!
No, not the famous management style but really just in time for the Bread Baking Babes challenge of july.
And what a challenge.....................
Natashya from Living in the kitchen with puppies came out with a very original and creative recipe:

Sukka bi tahin

Following the instructions of Natashya I got a nice smooth and pale dough that wasn't very hard to make.
Making the pasta of tahin and sugar meant nothing more than just stirring a few times and giving it a rest.
Flattening the dough and rolling out to nice thin rectangles didn't take much effort or time.
Not ever having smoked or even rolled a joint, it's not my cup of tea to make neat rolls of breaddough but I've managed.
Lien, thank you for the reassurance that it's no problem if the tahinpaste peeps through the dough.
My oven seemed to be too small for three of those big flat UFO's so this part of the job took some more time.
Time for coffee and a cooking magazine.

The result? They turned out wonderful and crisp and just in time (again) for a nice lunch. Being someone who even puts sugar on a peanutbutter sandwich I'like the taste. Thanks Natashya this is a very nice recipe and I loved making it.

C.) mooi bruin.

Low budget cooking: foodblog event july 2009
One of the recipes my family enjoys very much is this potatoe cabbage pie. It's easy to make and you can even make it an evening ahead. The ingredients are cheap and the recipe is healthy and nutritious. A spoon full of piccalilly makes it complete.

Potato cabbage pie with minced meat
400 gr. shredded white cabbage
1 cube chickenstock
500 gr. minced meat (beef)
1 diced onion
pepper, salt
1 teaspoon curry powder
1000 gr. potatoes, peeled
milk
a lump of butter

Cokk the cabbage in 5 minutes in a bit of water with the chickenstock. In the meantime: bake the onion and the minced meat till the meat starts to brown. Add the currypowder and season with pepper and salt. Cook the potatoes, season them wilt salt and pepper. Make a smooth mashed potatoes with the use of milk and butter.

Take a big ovenproof dish and butter it. Make three layers in it starting with the minced meat, followed by the cabbage and the mashed potatoes. Take care the surface is covered very well with the mashed potatoes and devide some butter flakes over it.

Bake the pie golden brown in the oven (390 dgr. F.). Enjoy this meal; there is enough to share.

Food blog event juli 2009

Food blog event july 2009

This time I've received the Olympic flame for a Dutch monthly foodblog event from Gabriella of Gabriella's creative kitchen. This was a bit unexpected so I needed some time to focus which theme would be suitable and exciting enough.

Just thinking of the news items the last year, the theme for july was obvious to me: low budget cooking! Worldwide the're so many people living on a low budget that foodbloggers can contribute by sharing recipes that are not expensive but healthy and tasty.

I know; it's from origine a Dutch event but my weblog is in two languages and it's my aim to collect a lot of recipes. Most of the English recipes will be translated in the round up and the other way round with the Dutch ones. At last, all the recipes will be translated but that will take some time.

How can you react?
  • write a low budget recipe that's a healthy and tasty meal and post in on your weblog
  • send me an email (marjoke@bitbak.nl) or place a comment on this blog with the URL of your weblog with the recipe
  • if you don't have a weblog, just send me the recipe with a picture
  • send in the recipe before 1 august 00.00 hour

Good luck and I'm looking forward to the results.

Marjoke
